Good Luck, the well known saying that people often use when wishing someone well in a task or ordeal that they are about to undertake. As a coach I think that it is an interesting concept; because to wish someone 'good luck' presupposes that there is a chance of 'bad luck' and or not doing as well as one might expect in said task. At face value it may seem nice thing to say to someone when you are wishing them well, but, are you actually setting them up to have an excuse for not having prepared themselves for whatever it is that they are about to do? Giving them a back door 'reason' for not achieving? How many times have you heard - Ah bad luck mate? Was it bad luck or if we are really honest it was because of a lack of preparation and training?
How would it be if instead of good luck, you suggested that the person(s) should 'Go Well' or 'Go and Win', 'Pass your Test', or even simply Do Well? The words we use have a profound influence on people, especially if you are in a perceived position of authority (have a read of Berne on Transactional Analysis) or excellence. Parent or coach. Perhaps you are an instructor? This is particularly important when we start to consider the unconscious mind (UCM), if you've been reading my blogs you will know that the UCM is the place where all learning, behaviour and change takes place. A suggestion of Do Well is likely to be accepted acted upon at an unconscious level at in a more positive way than 'Good Luck'. Simple phrases that are seemingly innocent at face value often aren't. What do you really want to say, what do you really want your client to do? Do you really want to leave them with an unconscious idea that they are gambling with chance; or would it be more useful to have them believe that they are they fully prepared and ready to gain the outcome they want?
